Preschool Program
Blue Leaf’s preschool program nurtures the growing independence and curiosity of early childhood. We honor each child through respectful guidance, opportunities for exploration, and thoughtful support for their social, emotional, and cognitive development.
“We see in education the opportunity to build a better society.”
Ages
2.5 – 6 years
Our Preschool Program welcomes children ages 2.5 through 6 years old. We recognize the importance of consistency and belonging, which is why we strive to keep children with familiar peers and teachers as they grow.
Preschool Program Daily Rhythm
Each day grows from the children’s own curiosity and ideas. As a Reggio Emilia–inspired, play-based preschool, we let their interests guide meaningful projects, explorations, and discoveries. Rooted in the RIE® approach and Blue Leaf theory, we trust children to lead the way through relationships, creativity, and a joyful love of exploration and learning.
Arrival & Welcoming
Children are greeted with warmth and care at 8:15am, joining the classroom or outdoor environment depending on the day. Mornings begin gently, with space for children to settle in, connect with friends and teachers, and follow their own curiosities. Teachers will have a provocation set up before the children arrive.
Morning Nourishment
A healthy snack is available when children are ready. Mealtime is calm and unhurried, encouraging independence and conversation as children share food together.
Caregiving Moments
Throughout the day, teachers create moments of connection grounded in respect and presence. Inspired by the RIE© approach, these interactions honor each child’s voice, autonomy, and individuality—strengthening trust and building meaningful relationships.
Outdoor Exploration & Play
Preschoolers are encouraged to move freely, explore nature, and engage in imaginative play. Teachers observe and extend their discoveries, allowing children to lead the way in their learning. After careful observation, teachers plan their lessons around the childrens interests, as to naturally flow into the children’s own curiosities.
Midday Meal
Lunch is a community experience where children gather to eat, share stories, and practice independence. It is a time of nourishment, connection, and joy. All food is vegetarian and made in-house for everyone from our infant program to our preschoolers.
Rest & Restoration
After lunch, children are supported in finding rest or quiet time that fits their individual needs, offering balance to the rhythm of the day.
Those no longer napping, are allowed to play freely and offered a variety of activities to participate in after they rest for the state’s required time.
Afternoon Play & Nourishment
As the afternoon unfolds, children return to play—indoors or outdoors—often revisiting the projects and ideas they began earlier. A snack is offered to fuel their continued exploration and creativity.
Greeting our Loved Ones
When the day comes to an end, we practice packing up and saying hello to our loved ones who are there to pick us up.
Extended Care
For those who benefit from our extended care option, children will migrate to a different part of the classroom or outdoor space to continue playing and exploring. Afternoon snack is offered to those who express interest. While this time is still guided by the children, we often will utilize these afternoon times to work on calmer arts and crafts activities as our days wind down.
Blue Leaf is the most dreamy, loving, respectful, supportive home-away-from-home for our preschooler. The Blue Leaf caregivers are highly qualified educators who are tuned in to the needs of the children and provide secure attachments, so that our 4 year old begs to go in every day. The indoor space is thoughtfully curated with beautiful toys and organic materials, and the outdoor space feels like a forest school with plenty of room to roam, a pretty creek, fruit trees/vegetable garden and play structures. There is a strong emphasis on health and safety, I appreciate the attention to cleanliness and providing nourishing food for the children.
More than that, Blue Leaf is committed to fostering a strong sense of community by providing opportunities to support families in raising their children. I’ve learned so much from Cassie and the team. Our family is so grateful that Blue Leaf is here in Boulder!
